In Front of Your Eyes
Manuel Devalos had changed his shirt. That was the first thing Allison noticed when she opened the door. Above her, clouds were gathering in the night sky, obscuring the moon and stars. Devalos stood at the curb, leaning against his Volvo. He wore the same blazer he’d had on when she and Scanlon had stormed his office, but under that, he now wore a crimson button-down.

Allison shut the front door quietly behind her, the sidewalk cooling under her bare feet as she went down to the road to meet Devalos. “Nice shirt,” she whispered as she came closer.

“It was a birthday gift,” he said, and leaned forward to chastely peck her on the cheek.

“From your wife? That’s a little too symbolic for my tastes,” Allison said, giving him a lascivious grin.

“From my sister Gladys,” he said, and kissed her on the lips.

When she woke up next to Joe, the red lights of the clocking blinking 3:33, she wasn’t sure why she was so surprised.

The morning dawned bright and hot; the blue sky overhead was cloudless and it was theoretically possible to see for miles. By the time Allison awoke to her alarm, Joe was out of bed and fully dressed. His spot on the bed was empty and cool; she couldn’t linger a moment longer either.

“Morning,” Joe said as she came into the bathroom, deftly shaving down the left side of his face.

“Are the girls up?” she asked.

“They’re eating breakfast,” Joe said, but before he could say anything else, the phone rang. Allison, who had been collecting her clothes, turned back to the bedside table and picked it up. “Hello?”

“Allison.” It was Lee Scanlon.

“Lee, what’s wrong?”

“Are you coming into the office today?”

“Yes. What’s going on?”

“I have some information on Daniel Rakowsky’s wife that I think you’ll be interested to see.”

Scanlon hung up with minimal niceties, and Allison quickly threw on a teal blouse and black pants. Slipping her feet into her shoes, she went out into the kitchen. Rikki was at the toaster, slathering jam onto pieces of browned bread. Next to her, Abigail was pouring juice into cups, using her finger to judge the height of the liquid in the glass. Ariel took the cups over to the table, where Marie and Bridgette sat in their chairs, and Megan sat up in her wheelchair, her feeding pump connected.

“Who wants Krunchy Krispies?” Joe asked, pulling a half-empty box from the top of the refrigerator and shaking it.

“I do!” Bridgette said.

“You had Krunchy Krispies on Friday,” Ariel pouted.

“I also have… Honey O’s and the ever-popular Bran Flakes.”

“I’ll take the Bran Flakes,” Allison said removing it from Joe’s grasp and pouring herself a cup of coffee.

Everyone eventually was seated at the table with glasses of orange juice, jam-soaked toast, and bowls of the various cereals. Allison ate quickly, bolting the cereal and gulping her coffee, so that she was able to check Ariel and Bridgette’s backpacks for their homework. “Ariel, did Dad sign your math test?”

“No.”

Allison pulled it out of the take-home folder and scribbled her name across the bottom. “Bridge, I am putting your field-trip money in the front pocket of your backpack. Don’t forget to turn it in.”

Joe wrapped his arms around her, and she turned towards him, giving him a kiss on the cheek. “Go do good works,” he said.

“Always and forever.”

“I’ll be late tonight,” Joe said. “I’ve got that meeting over at the Alanson Complex.”

“I guess I’ll hold things down,” Allison said, smiling. “Nothing else to do, what with my husband being a working man and all.”
