Here It Goes Again
“Marie, you’re not concentrating!”

“We’ve been practicing for hours!”

Allison stuck her head out the bedroom door. “Girls, what are you arguing about?”

There was a pause, followed by both girls chiming sweetly: “Nothing!”

Well, that was untrue. Allison finished brushing her hair, found her other shoe, and grabbed her sweater. “Ariel, we’re going to be late. Let’s go!”

She stopped short. The living room, which she had left only ten minutes before, had been radically changed. For one, there was their old treadmill, usually relocated to the patio, set up in between the couches. And there was a tinfoil-esque curtain, tacked up over the TV cabinet.

Plus her two girls, looking extremely guilty about something.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

“Marie and I are making a music video,” Bridgette said. “It’s for my media class.”

“It’s very important,” Marie said. She wore a pair of bright pink jeans that were about two inches too short, showing off her ankles, and a light pink tank top under one of Joe’s white button-down shirts.

“Does your dad know you’re wearing his shirt?”

“Yeah.”

“He said, ‘Just don’t get ketchup on it,’” Bridgette said, doing an amazing likeness of Joe’s voice.

“This will be good,” Ariel said, plopping down on the couch.

“Do you want to show us before we leave?” Allison asked.

“We’re not ready,” Bridgette said.

“I am!” Marie protested.

Bridgette sighed. “Okay. Get up on the treadmill.”

Marie scrambled to the treadmill. Bridgette grabbed the iPod dock remote and hunkered down behind the video camera. “And… action.”

From the iPod came a jaunty series of chords. On the treadmill Marie jumped and spun, as the treadmill groaned. Allison almost flinched, remembering how it had broken down under Joe’s weight once.

“Looking good!” Bridgette hollered.

Marie rode from one side of the treadmill to the other, then did an impressive rendition of the Running Man.

“… just when you think you’re in control…”

Marie threw herself to the moving band of the treadmill and rode it backwards, with jazz hands flailing the whole way.

The front door opened and Joe came in. Allison turned to face him.

“Do I want to know what’s going on?” he asked quietly.

“Sometimes real life is weirder than a dream,” she said, and they turned back to the action in time to see Marie perform a series of jumping jacks before leaping to the floor in the splits.

“I really have to go back to the gym,” Joe said.
