“What are you watching, Ariel?” Allison asked.
It was three o’clock on a Saturday afternoon, and the house was mostly empty. Bridgette had gone to Tommy Klass’s house, and Joe had taken Marie to the library. Ariel had remained in the house, under pretense of homework, but now, apparently finished, she was curled up on the couch, gazing at the television.
“I think it’s called ‘West Side Story,’” Ariel said without looking up.
Slowly Allison crossed the floor, each halting step accompanied by the soundtrack blaring from the TV. Onscreen a handsome boy dangled from a fire escape, singing, “And there’s nothing for me but Maria – every sight that I see is Maria!”
Allison sat on the couch next to Ariel. It was an odd position, a comforting one. Allison was close enough to wrap her arms around Ariel, but yet they sat apart, Allison’s left hand just brushing Ariel’s hair.
“Mom?”
“Yeah?”
“Is that what being in love’s like?”
“Hmm?”
“Tonight, tonight, it all began tonight – I saw you, and the world went away!”
“I mean, does love make you want to climb a fire escape and sing?”
Allison thought about this, a smile playing on her lips. “I don’t know if I’d climb a fire escape,” she said at last, “but sometimes love makes you do stupid things.”
“It looks romantic,” Ariel said. “Do you think a boy would do something like that for me?”
“We’d have to move to an apartment first,” Allison said.
“Mom!”
