Ariel couldn't believe that her parents idea of a fun weekend in New York was visiting the Museum of Natural History. Of all the cool places they could have gone, the DuBois family was headed right to the last place a teenager wanted to be. Sure, she had heard some neat things about the new exhibit that they had started showing at night, but a museum?
Ariel crossed her arms and pouted as Joe left with her little sisters to go see the miniature section while Allison stood next to her daughter, her nose buried in a pamphlet. Ariel had to admit, the giant dinosaur skeleton was kind of cool but the cavemen running around was a little much. "Mom, do I have to be here?" Ariel asked exasperatedly. Allison looked up, one eyebrow cocked.
"Yes, you have to be here. This is family time and you're learning something new," Was her mother's perfectly rational and calm response. Ariel rolled her eyes.
"That's exactly why I don't want to be here. I have to learn all this in school anyway, why would I want to learn it on vacation?"
"Because, dear lady, knowledge is power," A kind voice said from behind Ariel. She turned around and shrieked when she was met with a horse. She jumped back and looked up. A top the horse was a Teddy Roosevelt look a like. "Hello, I am Theodore Roosevelt, 26th president of these United States, who might you be young lady?" Ariel just stared, still trying to compute the image of the president talking to her. He looked so real...
"Her name is Ariel," Allison answered for her daughter. "It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. President," Allison said, half joking.
"Please, milady, call me Teddy," Teddy dismounted his horse and extended his hand first to Allison. "It's a pleasure to meet you Ms...?"
"Allison," Allison provided.
"Ms. Allison," Then he turned and took Ariel's hand which she had offered mutely. "And you Ms. Ariel. Would you like some advice from an old president?"
"Sure?" Ariel wasn't quite sure what to say.
"Some people are born great, others have greatness thrust upon them. When it comes time for you to shine, embrace it. It makes the whole process a lot easier," Teddy said with a warm smile and Ariel couldn't help but smile back as she nodded to show she understood. "It has been wonderful meeting you ladies, but I must be off. I have a whole museum to greet," Teddy saluted the two girls and climbed back on his horse and with a wave, walked off into the crowd, repeating his introduction of himself loudly.
"Hey, that was kinda cool huh?" Allison nudged Ariel. Ariel shrugged, not wanting to admit that the actor was pretty convincing.
"I guess. Can we go home now?"
